I've been a NYC resident for 19 years, throughout that time I've lived in different parts of the city but 10 years ago we moved to a little neighborhood in Brooklyn called Greenpoint. Immediately it felt like home. Since then, Greenpoint is one of the hottest places to live in the city, TV shows like Blue Bloods and The Good Wife are filmed right outside our front door every day. It's become a destination except for those of us who live here, it's still good old Greenpoint, our community mixed of Polish immigrants, hipsters, artists and young families. It's a place where you know your neighbors, and in one of the largest cities in the world, it's a true gem. As a parent here my family is ingrained in our school system. Wyatt goes to the oldest elementary school in Brooklyn, PS34. We have almost 500 students from Pre-K through 5th grade. We're a tight knit school and we spend a lot of time there.
Last week our little community got some devastating news - one of our own, one of our children was diagnosed with the "C" word. Cancer. Lymphoma. He's 9, his name is Danny and he's in the 4th grade at our school. His mother is our Parent Coordinator, she's a staple in our school yard, she's the smiling face you see greeting the kids every morning. Last week she was missing because she was tending to her son. Today she was back in that school yard with a smile on her face asking us how we were...she's one of a kind and she and her son need our help. Danny has a long road ahead of him, and Deise, his mom needs to be with him. This means she'll have to miss work, yet there will still be medical expenses to pay.
The teachers have created a Go Fund Me page for Danny and Deise to help with expenses, food, etc. We want to make sure they have support not just from our community but from the kindness of strangers. From people who have gone through hard times themselves and have come out of it because of the support they've received and now want to give back. From people like you and me. This week, pay it forward to Danny & his mom, let them know that you're saying a prayer, sending a good thought and maybe giving up your morning latte to make a donation to his fund. Whatever you can give would not go unnoticed.
