[et_pb_section admin_label="section"][et_pb_row admin_label="row"][et_pb_column type="4_4"][et_pb_text admin_label="Text"] You guys, there's some hub bub in my Facebook feed today about how parenting and the teaching of our children is collapsing. I shared a video on my page of 3 young ladies doing a presentation called "Changing the World, One Word at A Time"...it's raw, hard to hear and very powerful. These ladies are focused on teaching teens literacy through poetry and they are making big impressions on a lot of visible people recently opening for John Legend and appearing on the Queen Latifah Show. The ladies are Belissa Escobedo, Zariya Allen and Rhiannon McGavin and they are part of an organization called Get Lit.
The line that spoke to me the most was "the greatest lessons you will ever teach us you will not even remember". As a parent, as a coach and as an observer of humanity, this one single line brought tears to my eyes. That specific line resonated with me because it is applicable to every single one of us as parents, hell, as people. How often do we focus on the school work and disregard the life work? How often do we accept it instead of challenge it? If this message tells me anything it's to challenge it. It's to teach our children through our actions that we all have a message. Yes, history can be ugly - racism, inequality, war; but it can also be beautiful - rebuilding, growth, acceptance. Don't get me wrong, we have a long way to go on a lot of fronts but I truly believe if we teach the right way and lead by example, anything is possible. Be observant, be present and be honest with your children. Be strong and steadfast and confident in your beliefs. We have a responsibility to our children and their children, we have a legacy to leave. Our kids are living in a world where change happens at the speed of light. They witness history being made all the time, make sure they know they are a part of that. Their decisions and opinions matter, their voices matter. We have a responsibility to our community to be kind, compassionate, charitable and generous. We are helping no one if we turn a blind eye to society and accept all the things that are wrong. We have to work together to make it right. This is a challenge that is older than time it seems. We have to start somewhere...start with your voice. Watch this video. Listen to the words. Be your child's greatest lesson.
